House of Vineyard: 'Wij voelen ons veilig en gezien bij onze gekozen familie' | Nederland Protesteert

Hoe protesteert Nederland? Deel tien uit een serie: ballroom-iconen Elly en Amber Vineyard (Mother and Father of the @House of Vineyard) richtten in 2015 het eerste Nederlandse ballroom-house op. Oftewel, een gekozen familie. Elly Vineyard: 'Ballroom stelde ons in staat om onbeschaamd te leven en te spreken.'

Elly Vineyard: 'Ballroom allowed us to live and speak unapologetically and take up space radically!'

Waar gaat dit protest over? What is the protest about?
Ballroom op zich is een protest. Dit werd eind jaren 70 in Harlem (New York) gecreëerd als een vorm van veerkracht door en voor zwarte mensen, bruine mensen en queers en transgenders. Het is ontstaan in de strijd tegen afwijzing en discriminatie jegens ons. We bevonden ons in die strijd en daarom houden we als gemeenschap de legacy ende essentie levend en vergeten we niet waarom we hier zijn. Ballroom stelde ons in staat om onbeschaamd te leven en te spreken. Om  radicaal ruimte in te nemen!

Ballroom in itself is a protest. This was created as a form of resilience by and for Black, Brown, Queer and Trans people in the late 70s in Harlem, New York. It was created in a fight against rejection and discrimination against us. In that we found ourselves, in that fight, that is why we as a community keep the legacy and the essence alive while not forgetting why we are here! Ballroom allowed us to live and speak unapologetically and take up space radically!

Waarom besloot je het op deze manier te doen? Why did you decide to do it this way?Ballroom gaat niet alleen over vogue en competitie; het is een levensstijl. Het is gebouwd op een sterk fundament, namelijk een familie. Een gekozen familie. Velen van ons hebben niet de familiestructuren die we wensen te hebben of die ons accepteren. Onze gekozen families zijn waar we ons veilig en gezien kunnen voelen.

Ballroom is not just about voguing and competition. It is a lifestyle and there is a strong foundation which it is built upon, and that is family, chosen family. A lot of us don't have the family structures that we desire or that accept us, our chosen families are where we can feel safe and seen.
Wat is je doel? What do you hope to achieve?
Een House of Vineyard. Alles wat we doen is uit liefde voor onze gemeenschap. Verandering is wat ons inspireert. Wij geloven in het transformeren van ruimtes, het doorbreken van grenzen, en het inspireren van verbeeldingskracht. In alles wat we doen, of het nu gaat om balzaal, clubavonden of optredens, willen we de wereld laten zien dat er schoonheid en kracht zit in onze gemeenschap en onze verschillen. Wat we graag zouden willen veranderen... de WERELD!

House of Vineyard, everything we do is out of love for our community. Change is what inspires us. We believe in transforming spaces, breaking boundaries, and inspiring imagination. In everything that we do, whether it is within ballroom, club nights, or performances, we want to show the world that there is beauty and power in our community and our differences. What we would love to change... the WORLD!
